What comes next? is a common question that M.D./Ph.D. students have. The options for graduates of combined-degree programs are broad. Most graduates do go on to do clinical residency and fellowship training, many in the context of physician-scientist tracks that foster research within the residency and fellowship years. A large survey was conducted of over 3000 graduates of MD/PhD programs from the last 30 years. The results showed that more than 80% of graduates are pursuing careers that include more than half their time devoted to research. The results were recently published in this article in Academic Medicine (login required for full text). Here is an article on the job outlook for physician scientists from the Clinical and Translational Science Network.
